Wireless technology companies have been exploring various frameworks to enable ITS and general-purpose communications to share 5.9GHz band. The major concern for 5.9Ghz spectrum is its allocation to Wi-Fi on sharing basis, which may cause unnecessary interference in safety communications. Qualcomm made a proposal for distributing up the spectrum for safety and non-safety applications, instead of sharing entire bands for Wi-Fi. According to re-channelization plan, safety-of-life applications would be utilizing top 30Mhz of 5.9GHz band and non-safety-of-life applications would be provided with lower 45MHz of the band. The automakers have currently supported such distribution but as demand for Wi-Fi connected devices increase manifold, violation of such distribution looks possible in next few years.
